The game is called Prison Break, and it’s a side-scrolling beat ‘em up about a con named Carl who wants to enjoy an evening at the local pub. Unfortunately, the police aren’t very happy about his escape, and he’ll need to fight through the cops to get there. He also doesn’t have any money, so in order to buy a drink you have to beat up civilians, who run around the map in a state of panic.

I submitted it about 2 minutes before the deadline, so there’s a lot missing. Collision detecting is far from perfect, there’s no sound, and most of the art was “borrowed” from random places. Still, making a game like in a single weekend felt really awesome, and I intend to take it as a lesson and learn from the experience for my next game jam.

Putting this game together was a real learning experience for me, both in terms of what I did right as well as what I got wrong. More importantly, however, is the fact that I “finished” it. My hard drive is a digital graveyard of unfinished projects, tech demos, and works-in-progress. Having a clear goal and a deadline really helped me to focus on the task at hand, and get it to a state where it’s a playable game.

If you want to try it for yourself, you can download it here. It requires the XNA 4.0 Redistributable , and (as always) the source code is available on my Github repository. Let me know what you think!

Ludum Dare #25

Ludum Dare #25:
I’ll be trying my hand at this whole game jam business this weekend. Well, me...

Ever wish you could easily copy and paste emoticons? Well, me either, but thanks to an hour of me messing around in Visual Studio, now you can.

CopyPad sits in your system tray, just waiting for you to click on it. When you do, it brings up a menu of emoticons to select from. Just click on the one you want to use, and you can paste it into any application!

Protips:

If you want to start CopyPad automatically with Windows, just move it into the Programs > Startup folder in your start menu.

Totally a Bug: The emoticons may not draw correctly on the menu, probably because of Window’s horrible handling of Unicode. Don’t worry, though! You will still be able to paste them properly, and programs like your web browser should handle them like you’d expect.

Right-clicking on the icon brings up the menu. If you left-click on it, you can get the ಠ_ಠ (look of disapproval). I clearly use this face too much in normal conversations.

If you have any suggestions for new emoticons, send them my way. Alternatively, fork the code and add them yourself!
